First Post!! Yay! Next year I plan to get a series 1 CNC for my home workshop/lab (er not yet built!) and I'm currently in the process of putting a gate in my garden wall for access. Anyone know off the top of their head how wide I should make the gate to easily get the machine in? I heard 1700mm but this seems a little wide.. Thanks No. 6 |

| I concur. My Series I BOSS measures 46.5" (1181mm) from the left edge of the table over the X axis ball screw nut on the right side, and I'd rather not be banging that nut against anything, so 48" (1200mm) would be the absolute minimum. Since 48" is a bit wide for a single door (but perhaps not a gate) I can see where the 66" (1700mm) recommendation comes from; a 66" double door, with only one 33" leaf normally in use. That is, indecently, exactly what I have in my shop. Manual Bridgeports with longer tables can go through narrower doors, as the machine can go through at an angle and the table cranked back and forth. With the big electrical boxes on a DOSS, there is not much to be gained, even if one disconnects the stepper or servo to move the table by hand. |
