Motor upgrade

I have a bridgeport clone with a 2hp. 3phase motor ( 1720rpm ) and a 4 step pulley. I wanted to have more rpm speed and what I have heard one way of doing it is by adding a VFD.

Can somebody here give me some background about VFD and what can I achieve if I get one for my motor

You'll love it.

Cruise the autmationdirect.com website. Download some manuals. They are closing out Hitachi VFDs, very good value, I have four of them.

You want a 2hp rated for 1 phase input (unless you have real three phase at your site). You'll need 220 VAC to power it. Its handy to have a speed pot and forward/reverse switch separate from the VFD, but you can just use the VFD control panel.

You can run up to twice motor speed and down to 10% of motor speed. But be aware that you lose power as you slow down - at 10% you'll have less than 1/4 horsepower.

Hi Karl, does it mean that it's like having two motor in one? I could run it at 1720 rpm and 3440 rpm?
