    Rattle up top

Bridgeport clone (Hartford) step pulley 9x42 mill.

During heavy cuts I get a rattle up top. Sounds just like it if from the main pulley on top of spindle.

Tonight I took pulley system off, nothing noticable. Only thing I think it may be is the H/L engangement thing (not sure real name). Reminds me of a detroit locker in a car or something.

Anybody else have this issue, is it normal, what do I need to fix?

    Jeff

    Ty,

That is hard to say from here.

Could be the bull gear assembly or the motor or the motor shaft / pulley.

Does it happen in both high and low?

If only low, I would look at the bull gear set.

Both high and low, I would look at the pulley to motor shaft interface or the spindle.

Here is a link to replacement parts.

Sorry, not much help from 1000 miles away. Sometimes you just need to be there.

    Yes, happens in both speeds.

I am 99.9% sure is nothing to do with the motor or pulley that is on the motor.

When you took the varidrive apart how much play was there between the bushings and the shafts? Are the keys worn? How much play in the clutches? (But this only relates to high gear.)

Is there a spline drive inside this spindle? Perhaps the spline is getting worn.

You might try replacing the belt. A lack of horsepower could also contribute, depending on how heavy your heavy cuts are. If the cutter tends to slow the spindle with every tooth engagement, it could cause a rattling effect.
First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.
