Bridgeport boss power supply

Hey! I am brand new to this site (as a member) but have been reading for quite some time.

I have a boss series I and am retrofitting with gecko stepper drives and a new power supply. Marve at Gecko told me I could keep the supply, but after a little more conversation with him, we both decided to replace it. Does anyone know where I could find a 60V 500W power supply? I am using the gecko g203v with the original steppers.

3.9 V 6a 200 steps per rev...900 oz

Can anyone tell me what Volt and Watt power supply I need need and where I can find one?

Thanks,

Toroidal transformers are great for building stepper power supplies and the are fairly cheap and compact. There is a good pdf on all the info you will need to build a power supply on Bob Campbell's site, you will get it here http://www.campbelldesigns.com/files...ply-part-1.pdf

Smile Thanks

I am not really interested in building one, but I will if I have to. The original Bridgeport had a massive one in it at 60 VDC. However, the machine was designed to run on three phase. It was also largely disassembled when I got it. Do you know if I could use the existing 3Phase transformer that came in the machine? I thought I could us one or two of the three windings to get the desired results. Any experience with building them?

I was going to use the Bridgeport transformer (T2) in the lathe I am retrofitting at the moment but in the end I got servo drives/motors that have there own power supply internally.
I have three phase power so was using that for the Bridgeport transformer but as it is basically just three transformers together it could be wired for three single phase transformers. Not sure what voltages you would get out so a bit of experimenting would be needed.

Also worth mentioning is if you have a 60V AC output once you rectify and smooth it the DC will be aprox 1.4 times more, ie 60V AC will give you 84V DC which is a bit too much for the Geckos. Look for around 50 to 55V AC transormer.

Thanks Hood! I am on it. I think I'll try the transformer. I just ran Bob Campbell's formula and I believe I have enough components to do this. The transformer (not sure if oem) is 60 70 & 80 VAC Secondary. I am not sure what I could come up with experimenting with a combination of coils.

Now you've gotten me excited again. Looks Like I'm back on track. I'll keep you posted of my progress. Off to the shop!

Thanks again, Hood.

Yes if you have them the big Capacitors in the Bridgeport cabinet are ideal for your power supply, in fact they are overkill but its nice to be well into the safe zone
I have a wiring diag for the T2 transformer that someone on the zone gave me, it wont help for working out the voltages for using single phase but it should help letting you know how to rewire for single phase. if you want it PM me your email.
