Stupid Heidenhain question of the day...

OK, I got motion etc out of this S1 MK1 BPT with the 151B control, I think all the parameters are set right, thanks to all.

Now I tried some simple programs a few lines long (remember, I am a beginner at CNC!) trying to figure out how all of the buttons relate. So I discovered that when you have an M04 on a motion line nothing happens unless the spindle switch is on and you push the spindle enable button on the front, then it takes off and runs, good!

The problem I am having is when I insert a Tool Call block the control will not advance beyond than step. In single step, auto, with the spindle on, push the spindle enable button, push cycle start, etc., won't proceed. I know this has to be something really simple and stupid, but I can't figure out what it is!

What do I need to do?

    It's the parameters stupid

    Just kidding

I believe you may be set up for a tool table. You probably want to change that to no table, define the tools within the program and then call them. ISTR someone had this issue or one similar recently.....

Try calling tool 0 and see if it will fix it for testing[or drilling]

just looked it up parameter 225 set to 0 for no tool table

Gus, MP 225 was originally is was set to 10, but I reset it to 0, restarted the control (mains power) no difference. I just tried Tool Call 0, same result. It sits there with the "*" meaning it is under control, but will not advance. I tried various S settings from 0 to 2000, no difference. It is a very simple program:

    0 BEGIN PGM 1 INCH
    1 TOOL DEF 1 L+0.000 R+0.500
    2 TOOL CALL 1 Z S1000
    3 L X+2.000 Y+2.000 etc.

for example. Won't go past the Tool Call line. Got to be something simple.

    More info:

You can execute a Tool Call in MDI mode. I get the same result: the "*" comes on, never completes. If for example you do a move in this mode, the "*" comes on while the move is in progress, once completed the "*" goes out and control is returned to the panel.

Maybe this is one for Heidenhain tech support.

I have been thinkin on it, and cannot for the life of me figure it out. It is like it is waiting for a response from something[like the PLC] that is not coming. Still thinking it might be a parameter

OK, more parameters than you can stand. Enclosed is a xls spreadsheet with all of the parameters I have collected, and a very brief description of each. The last column is what I have set mine to.

    Enjoy!

With the program running, and the spindle switched to 'on' on the motor head panel I would expect it to halt at the tool call until you press the 'cycle start button' on the Heidenhain panel. The machine will need an air supply to release the spindle brake and to alter speed.

Give me your email and I'll forward a known working bit of code

i don't need descriptions and don't have excel. As a rule, post universal formats[pdf txt] so those troglodytes among us can read them.

    Mystery solved!

Gus and Andrew, thanks for your inputs. I tried the code Andrew sent, same result. So I called Rick Antkowiak at Heidenhain who was once again very helpful and very knowledgeable, and quickly solved the problem. It WAS the machine parameters, specifically 61 "output of tool numbers". This came back to me set at 2, I think I saw that but found no reason to change it - just supposed to tell you the tool number called for. But Rick said that is the default Heidenhain definition, who knows what Bridgeport did. Anyway, changing it to 0 solved the problem. It now behaves as it is supposed to, stops at the Tool Call until Cycle Start is pressed.

Rick sent me this "official" default parameter set for the 151B control (OK, Gus, in txt format!).

    Now on to backlash problems.....

interesting... I saw that parameter but couldn't see how it would do that.....I don't think any of my non toolchanger machines stop on tool call.
