are my drives dead

You are correct that an error 4000 is an axis drive fault. The red LED on each drive is lit when the drive is off or there is a fault. If a drive sees a problem with a motor, or cable, or itself, it will create an axis fault and all will drop out. The whine from the chokes will cease as well. What you need is to invest in a maintenance manual (machinemanuals.net). See what is in tolerance: drive power supply, logic power supply, etc.You have 3 axis. Compare them. Measure the armature resistance of each motor. current draw, etc.
It is common to remove an encoder connection and then tweak the offset pot to balance that drive so there is no drift.
The maintenance manual will tell you how to access the FMDC board (through K3 connector) with a PC to get to diagnostics (called a fist event monitor).
Swap drives (they slide out) and see if the fault follows the drive.

thanks george for the info , ok my leds on the drives are never lit, on or off, i have checked the pwr on the board it is at 100 volts on wire 250.if the lights never come on what does that mean ? or what do i check next (dead) so do i have to read the fist to fix this ? iam really at my ends with this thing , your help is keepin me sain..thanks again brett

there is no where to get this info manual without having to buy it...i have program and parts manual ...

i need the time to find a schematic for this machine. Need to see if the drives create their own logic voltages or if they come from the control. Need to see if the drives may be ON even though you did not command it. Example: the EZTRAK drives are On in a normal state and the application of 12 VDC turns them OFF.

so the machine will have a 4000 code if there a drive problem right, which could be a number of thing from what i understand, motors , drives, ? , but if i have done the 17 fault wire jumper that would eleminate the motors right, plus the boards not showing any signs of life would be a problem. i am with you they are not getting power or not makin any power. its hard for me to think that a three drives are dead at once , i dont know if this happens alot or not but hard to see that happening. the boards have 100 volts on pin 4 and 3 on the boards main pwr buss. what enables the drives from the machine, a volt signal or how does that work? i just dont think they are not getting turned , is the pwr that enables the chokes for the motors the same pwr that enables the drives?

thanks george for taking your time to help me fix this, i hate to have something kick my butt like this, but this a new ballgame to me. so your help will help my win over this machine ..lol thanks Brett

Interesting that the motors move. If a limit switch was stuck open, the machines gives an AXIS LIMIT. An alarm 4000 is displayed by the control by signals received by the FMDC from the axis drives. Does not compute!

your right this dosent make any sence . as long as i hold the limit switch in the axis motors will jog. so the fist is the only way to find out..

I am showing the fault line to the drives needs to be grounded when there is no problem. There is a ELI board that has three opto coupler outputs in series to combine the three fault signals into one. Hook them back up and measure the voltage on them. Should be close to zero on all three.

so do i need to ground the 3 fault wires (pin 17) all three of the singals turn into 0ne on the eli board, is thatwhat youare saying... if so what pin on the eli do i measure. thanks Brett

I do not have a complete schematic, just bits and pieces. Here is the ELI board.
