I have a Boss 5 exhibiting some minor backlash of ~ .002 or ~003 in both X and Y. Is there any good sites online with pictures detailing the different areas to look at such as the nut mounting yoke, gibs, and thrust bearings? Are these angular contact on the Boss5? Rather than compensating in the control (Mach2/3) I want to get rid of the backlash. Thanks Scott |

| Typically I have found that the majority of backlash on these older machines is in the play between the ball screw and ball nut. There is also a tolerance buildup with the bearings, belts, pulleys, etc. Move the table to an extreme, make sure gibs are not too tight and see if you have the same amount of backlash. If so the screw/nut fit is probably good and your play may be in the drive (motor to ballscrew including bearings). The Y axis is a bit easier to check because you can see if the screw moves in and out with a dial indicator as you reverse direction. This would point to the bearings. George George
