Bridgeport Harig EzSurf

Since this is/was a Bridgeport supplied machine tool, this appears to be the closest section for this post....

Looking for the PROGRAMMING MANUAL for the Bridgeport EzSurf.

Prefer PDF but GOOD photocopy will suffice.

Sadly, MachineManuals doesn't have the the programming manual although they did have the maintenance/user manual.

Thanks

Nope, not yet anyway. A friend already took GOOD care of me, thanks!!!

Had a nice discussion with the Harig people the other day. They still have some spare parts for the Surf. Learned with the PWMINT board did and what they did to get around it. Unbelieveable...

No wonder BPT went bust.

Every time you turn arund, they were redesigning the darn controller (9 or 10 different BMDC"s) or a doing a hang on board to do some little nurdley dumb thing that shouldn't have been allowed to do.

If they had done their "systems work" with more commonality in mind and/or more robust components and commitment, they wouldn't have had to resort to "vendor of the week" related modifications to the control system and/or the BMDC.

I think I can count 5 different servo amps that were used ot the DC32 based stuff and maybe 6 different servos not counting VMC"s which I'm semi-lacking info one.

When you have that many permutations, stuff gets unnecessarily complex and costs SOAR.

Oh well. May the company RIP.

We have an EzSurf and are needing a copy of Ezutil.exe for connecting to a PC via rs232. Did you get the software disks with your machine?

I just picked up one of these brand new but been sitting for a long time.

Looks like the battery on the mother board is dead. When we power it up and point to the hard disk #1 it seems to go to the EZSurf software but then it comes up with "NO BMDC, DESKTOP' HIT ENTER" and then thats it. It doesn't seem to power up the servo drives or the hydraulics.

I have the manual and I can copy software if it can help anyone.

Hello All,
We just bought a Harig? Bridgeport? grinder with the EZSurf software. I don't know how to use a grinder but the old computer controller is right up my alley. Now you can guess my age.
I am still trying to figure out what brand of motherboard we have. I am trying to hook up an external battery. I believe at this age, most people used a 4AA battery pack, or a 3.6V lithium external battery. Connection is through a 4 pin header. After the battery is plugged in, you can set the hard drive parameters and hopefully your drive will boot. Right now, I can enter the HD parameters, but the next day the CMOS will have forgotten and no boot.
It looks like Harig set the drive we have for non-standard parameters, so it will appear to the system that you have a ~512MB drive. So says the sticker they put on top of the hard drive.
Cylinders: 1024
Landing Zone: 1024
Heads: 16
Sectors: 63
Precomp: 0
I've successfully made a copy of our HD onto a 2GB HD, and booted it. Still have the battery issue, though. I also backed up the files on the HD. Forgot what version we have.

The identifying parts of the mobo:
SiS chipset
AM486DX2-S CPU
"R407W2" Label
Award BIOS string: 01/08/96-SIS-85C471B/E/G-2C4I9R01-00
8 SIMM slots

I'm searching places like here to find the mobo type and a manual:
ISA486GXi Motherboard

So far no luck. At some point I will quit and just figure out where to try the external battery. I really don't want to blow up the mobo.

Good luck all. I think we can work together to figure things out.

Andrew

Why not replace the Nicad CMOS battery. That is what I do. You have to remove it anyway or it will leak and destroy the mother board. It is unsoldered. I use a soldering iron and a solder sucker.
The old bios does not support a HD larger than 504 MB hence the label on the hard drive. If you use a bigger HD you have to Fdisk it for the 504MB and make it a active DOS partition. Then load DOS 6.20 and then the machine software. The CMOS settings for the HD must match per the label. There are many posts here about that.

Why don't I replace the battery? Fear! I don't want to be the one that broke the Harig controller. There's a VLB CPU daughterboard on there I don't want to touch. But you're right. I should at least cut out the nicad.

Here's the battery I bought:
NEW Tadiran TL-5242/W - 3.6 Volt 2100mA Lithium Battery | eBay

I think it has the right connector. I was not able to find the brand of motherboard that's in there. I looked through every one of the motherboard layouts I could find and no match. I'll have to get in there with a DMM to get the polarity right. If it works I'll post a picture. If it doesn't I'll post a picture of angry face.

Thanks,
Andrew
