2 hp to 1.5 hp motor interchange on vari-speed head??

On a 2 hp series 1 machine...will a 1.5 hp motor directly interchange with the existing motor? If not, what would have to be changed to put the lower hp motor in place of the 2 hp motor?

Also, if I decide to rewind the existing motor, what can I expect to pay? I want to know the approximate motor shop charge, not the price quoted by a machinery service shop. Thanks!

The motors have different size shafts. Thus the motor adjustable vari disc assembly and stationary varidisc assembly would be needed as well. Everything else stays the same.

BUT!

If you ever order parts for this head, you have to remember what you have done. Reason being that the drive to the back gear pinion shaft uses pulleys and a belt with round teeth on the 2 HP and square teeth on the 1.5HP. Typically a customer does not call in with part numbers and we ask what HP the head is and order parts by HP. You can see where this can lead to the wrong parts shipping.

I'm wondering if the components that you mentioned (motor adjustable vari disc assembly and stationary vari disc assembly) are all attached directly to the motor shaft and will come out of the machine when the motor is detached?

If I get the sheave assembly that comes out when the 1.5 hp motor is removed, it should drop right in where the 2 hp unit was?

The proper way of removing a motor would be with these attached and with the spring compressed by two screws. So the answer is yes but not guaranteed.
When pulling a motor, turn it on, turn speed adjuster untill it is at minimum speed (now spring is compressed), turn spindle off, take screws and place from below to compress spring keeper to varidisc (note that the 1.5 HP uses 10 X 24 while the 2 HP uses 10 X 32 screws.), now with out turning spindle on, turn speed adjuster to max speed. This releases the belt so it can be pulled back thus allowing the motor and vari discs to be removed as an assembly. It is in the manual. Now the snap ring can be removed and the adjustable vari disc removed as an assembly.
Unfortunately when I am called in to repair one of these, I usually cannot follow this procedure and have to deal with a very nasty spring.

Thanks for the explanation...unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can get the vari-discs with the 1.5 hp motor.

So, my next question...what would you think about simply making an adapter sleeve that would allow mounting my 2 hp vari-disc assembly onto the smaller 1.5 hp shaft? Can you tell me how much difference there is in the diameter of the two shafts? Is the vari-disc assembly driven by a key, a pin, or something else?

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I just bought the machine, haven't gotten it home yet, and am trying to figure some of this out without seeing either the machine or the motor.

If you have a lot of time on your hands, MAYBE this would work out. I still believe you have have balance issues and thus vibration. You would need to bore the varidisc (both of them) so you can make a steel insert that you could press fit and pin in. Then bore it for the plastic inserts which also require internal grooving. Both need keyways broached. The spring collar, I would buy. I have to get to the office and measure some shafts or vari discs to get the shaft size. 7/8ths and 3/4 ring a bell though.
I still say that purchasing them may be expensive but not a bad idea. Maybe even Ebay.
