how to remove backlash in knee drive bevel gears

My Bridgeport has probably ten thousandths backlash in the bevel gears from the knee drive handle to the lead screw. Aside from replacing the gears with new ones is there any way to adjust out some of that play? Do I need to remove the gears and put in shims or is there some type of other adjustment mechanism? I don't have the machine taken apart yet so it is very difficult for me to see what there is to work with right now.

They need to be shimmed closer together for tighter engagement.
