    R2E3 z axis mispositioning?

    Hi

I seem to be getting a error on my Z drive, almost like it is loosing steps.

I've set up encoder with oscilliscope to best I could and compared to other encoders. But if I bring my z axis down to a height guage, zero it, then quill up, then jog back down to '0' on my height guage, my display will show .0024" or more, the more I go up and down the more it goes out, to a maximum of say .25"

    Any ideas?

Swap motor with another axis. If it follows the motor it may be the encoder as you suspect. But make sure pulleys are not slipping, etc. (mark them to the shafts).
There is a coupling between the encoder and the motor. Is that tight?
    Maybe a bad encoder?
No, I have not been to the office to look for encoder adjustment procedures.
The older machines had a different encoder. I believe the BEI was the better of the two. Had a few cases years ago where the older one was replaced by the BEI but nothing since.

So I replaced the IC chips on the Z axis encoder and it's all back up and running!

    Thanks for the help again!
