Considering purchasing a 1990 Interact 412. Price about 10K. Currently running and producing good parts. I have known and worked with the owner (original owner) for 26 years. I have used and programmed cnc for 11 years, HAAS, and Cincinnati 850sx and A2100. Not much Fanuc. My questions here relate to the general weak points and strong points of the 412, and the Fanuc control. X,Y,Z backlash and gibbs - Easily accessed and adjusted? Need good info about eliminating backlash in the leadscrews, in addition to always approaching critical locations from the same direction. Lubrication - Access to fittings. Typical problems with the 412? Tool changer Problems? Bridgeport service - support for the 412? Fanuc service - support for the control. Does the control have, or accept, a full key-pad? Typical problems with the Fanuc control? RS232 interface - Does the control accept drip feed? Floppy drive - Available? Problems with operation? Storage capacity - Expensive? difficult to expand? I would like to thank all who respond with info and insight into the 412's and their general reliability, etc, as well as general comments you may have. CODE |

| Way back in my memory, I installed two of these with the FANUC OMmate control. One even had linear scales on it for better accuracy. I remember that the control was tedious in that you had to arrow over to anything you wanted to do. The Heidenhain versions were a lot more popular. I did not work on these after install so I must think of them as reliable but at this point they are 15 years old and the amount of care they need nor the ability to find parts is now an unknown. The memory was small and I do not believe that an upgrade is cost effective. I would not be surprised if it did not have DNC capability. Do the current owners have the manuals? Can they send you the specifications section? I do not believe I have any manuals at the office on the Fanuc version of the 412 to even look at. Service would be by a Jurrasic such as I if one is in your area. BPT has been purchsed by Hardinge and you may find some parts there but I do not believe you will find support there. Backlash is a parameter (FANUC). The machine is enclosed thus getting to gib screws is not as easy as a series one. Floppy no. RS232 yes. Full size keyboard no. Support, call Fanuc and ask but probably yes. George

| George - Thanks for the helpful info. You are certainly correct that the control is tedious. The control and machine have been reliable, but a 15 yr old 412 is chancy. Yes, the small memory is very restrictive. The owners do have manuals, will ask for specifications. Regarding service - I am in northern New Mexico, 71 miles from the nearest stop light! Service tech would be $. I will investigate the 412 further, and continue shopping for a different machine also. Thanks much for your helpful response - Code |
