I' m just about to buy a Bridgeport series I CNC with Boss 5 control. I went to the owner today. The machine looks in pretty good shape. He bought the machine to do a retrofit but he hasn't got the time anymore and needs the space it takes up. So the machine is in its original state. There is one problem though: The spindle (z) moves up and down when using the controls. However if you want to move the x- and y-axis, nothing seems to happen. It seems to me that the motors are turning (the motors make a soft noise) but no movement. He tells me that it has moved in the past and thinks he has done something to the settings causing this problem. Does anyone know what the problem could be? |

| Probably a shorted transistor on those axis. 2N6547 Motorolla. This is the most common issue with these machines but with the proper input voltage and the current set correctly I have seen them run for years without blowing one. Search the posts for this. George

| I know the owner has switched the input voltage from 3x220 V to 380 V. Maybe something went wrong there. When I get my hands on the machine, it will be the first thing I look into. |

| Remove the computer cabinet and sell it for scrap. Actually, there's a bunch of stuff inside you might want to save, like the heat sinks. Install a PC, a bob, and Gecko 203V or 213V drives, and EMC2. You'll have a much more capable machine, and you're going to only spend a bit over $1000 to do it. http:///tomwade.me/tw/machinist/nm/ Tom |

I know that modern electronics are a better choice, but I'm just getting started in this machining world and don't want to make expensive mistakes. Thanx for the advice and I love your website |
