VMC 760-22

Hi all. Just picked up a VMC760-22 on auction. The machine looks to be in decent enough shape, but I have two control issues.

The CMOS battery is shot, but that's an easy one. The bigger issue is it appears the hard disk is dead. I found all the proper settings for it and have entered them in the BIOS, but the drive just makes a weird piiiing (sounds like space invaders) noise and I get a HDD controller failure error.

The controls all look to be original and un-molested. I confident everything will work.. but I really need a hard disk with the operating system.

Can someone sell me one or point me to an image for it?

Thanks in advance.
Hank.

I suggest you get a preloaded DOM (flash memory HD emulator) from EMI-INC.net.
It will be the latest software available for your machine, will not fail like the typical hard drive, and will come with a OS so you do not need to search the internet for DOS 6.20. And you get support. What you have lost is the backlash values, pitch error comp, tool changer height, orient position, leadcomp.dat (if used), etc. Do you know if this is a 6k or a 4k spindle? Believe you will be asking further questions here. Do you have the manuals?

Thanks George. After a bit more searching here yesterday I had found an older thread that mentioned EMI. I'll be calling them today as soon as they open.

I do have some manuals for the controls. Not sure about the spindle speed, couldn't find it anywhere. The machine was built in 8/96.

If spindle pulleys are 1 to 1, it should be a 6K. If spindle pulley is larger than the motor pulley, it will be a 4K.

Well I have the machine booting up, but so far no luck enabling the axes.

I did some searching but came up empty looking for electrical schematics.
Are they available as a download anywhere?

What is the status of all the boards and drives? You need a maintenance manual which includes the schematics. Try machinemanuals.net for a manual on CDROM.

We got our VMC760 up & running but is it normal for a constant air flow to be going through the spindle on this machine? Also what is factory rapid traverse rate 1000 or 1210 ipm?

What was the issue?
Yes, normal for air around the spindle. Typically set to 15 PSI.
Rapid is 1000 on X and Y and 800 on Z (I think).

Simple fix once we found it. There is a plastic pc on the disconnect that activates a contactor to allow drives to enable. This pc was not letting the contactor come all the way up. Ground it down a bit and it works fine. Thanks for all your help George.
