Chatter marks and heat on a series 1

I just got a series 1 textron cnc, I yanked the electronics and now have it moving and running code. I ran a circular part and did a slow cleanup pass taking off .005 of material in a climbing direction at around 4ipm, material aluminum. Anyway, my little mill will give me a mirror finish when do this but my new series 1 chatters no matter what the speed of the spindle. Could this be the bearings in the quill and spindle? How would I check? FYI I have a kwik chuck, looks factory and I havn't figured out how to get it out.

Andy Most likely Bearings are at fault. You might want to indicate the spindle with a tenth indicator ,try to move it buy hand if its that bad, or maybe leave the indicator in place and run your program. but it may just need some sero tuning?

I figured it out, loosen up the quill nose and hit it out from the top, carefully.

The bearings have a little slop and the quill was getting hot down by the chuck, Can I get these bearings from a bearing store or do I need to order them special?

This is a pair of precision bearings, sold as a set. They are commercially available. I need to find a newer manual where the generic number is available.

This place has a spindle rebuild kit for $275, what do you think, should I get it?

I think this is a very good price. I wonder about 2 things. These bearings have no seals nor shields. As a matter of fact, on a daily basis, on puts a light spindle oil in a cup on the top of the head that keeps these oiled. Then why use this special grease if it will be flushed out?
Second question: I ship spindles out to C & R Precision spindles in Tualatin, Oregon. For about as much as BPT gets for the bearings, I can get this spindle rebuilt AND the taper re-ground with the spindle IN the new bearings so I have almost zero runout.
There is the outside chance that the tool holders are not tight in the spindle causing the chatter. Have you verified this?

Loose tool holder? Maybe, how tight do the kwik chucks need to be?

My only concern is that the botom of my quill is about 150 degrees after running for 5 minutes at about 2800 rpm. I am thinking this is a vital clue

150 degrees is way too hot for that speed. Bearings!
