Question 1982 Seres 1, swap spindle innards?

I have a 1982 series 1 that has a fully functional R8 spindle in it. I snagged a kwik-switch 20 spindle by universal engineering a ways back on ebay. The KS20 spindle appears to be in good shape and is the manual locking nut type.

I am interested in switching to the KS20 spindle despite the lack of affordable tooling for the following reasons.

    1. substantialy more taper contact over the original R8 spindle.
    2. no drawbar required.
    3. easy to set and record Z heights.

Can anyone here confirm that the innards (spindle and bearings) can be swapped into my existing quill? I dont want to do an entire quill swap for the following reasons.

    1. why swap a working original quill? fit is correct and in good shape.
    2. machine has been CNC retrofit (by me) and tear down to do full quil replacement would be a real PIA.
    3. the KS20 spindle's quill has a few dings and I would have to spend a fair amount of time stoning down these defects before I could feel comfortable installing it in my quill housing.

I am tired of R8 tooling. I am used to a falcon quick change now, and I would like to up the rigidity a bit and I think that the KS20 spindle should do that quite effectively. Not only does it do away with the Falcon master holder, but it keeps the easy (no reach) quarter turn tool change and repeatable Z height. Frankly from my looking at the KS20 spindle, it looks as if it will hold tools more securely than the R8 ever could, especially when the tool once required a large R8 emdmill holder (7/8) plus, because it could not be held in a collet. It appears that the KS20 spindle can hold tools just as large as the R8 collet could and possibly larger.

I expect that all of this could be debated back and forth quite a bit. I would love to know however, if I can just swap the innards of the two spindles? and can this be done without removing the quill from the head of my BP?

    Best,
    Nate.

Dunno, but the spindle comes out pretty easily, so you could measure it if you have it all in front of you

The CNC spindle is longer. If both are the same length, they should interchange. I am assuming it is an assembly with the correct quill nut.

This must not be a CNC spindle because the quill has the rack cutouts on the back.

I believe that the quill nut will fit the quill that is currently in the machine. I hope....

The spindle will then interchange. But I would not swap the quills. For one it is a lot more work. Two, the quill is matched to the housing. There is a number stamped on the top of the quill and on the quill housing because when made Bridgeport had a pile of each and measured them so they were close and required less fitting. They always asked for this number when ordering a replacement.
