| Hello All Had an alarm DC VOLTAGE MISSING today, After 3 hours of searching I finally found the 24 volt regulator split in half. I temporally bypassed the regulator with a jumper wire and the machine runs fine. I went to radio shack & bought a 7812 regulator and soldered in place. It Still Refused to work, I used a plastic rod to poke at the solder joints to make sure they were connected. When I bumped the wire leading to the first resistor on the board, The new regulator exploded (So much for the poking around method) Any one have the spec's on this Board, it doesn't look that complicated but I don't know the difference between the 4 resisters on this board. I can solder fairly well, but must face the fact that I'm a machinist not an electrician. Thanks Mark |

The 7812 is a 12v regulator not a 24v. Presumably if you bypassed the original regulator you are running on the unregulated voltage that's maybe 30-35v - could cause you a few problems in the future if components downstream are not rated for the higher voltage.

| Yes Andrew the power supply is putting out 30 to 35 volts. I only bypassed the regulator to test the machine. (not running this way). The Radio Shack package was marked "7812A 24v Regulator" if this not right then maybe thats why it blew. The original was damaged to badly to get numbers off of so tried the first 24v I found, Can you recommend one that will work? Thanks Mark |

Well it should be a 7824 as a generic part number. You need to check what current is drawn as those regulators tend to come as 100ma or 1a versions.I wouldnt personally run with the original regulator linked out, as it will do damage.

| Hi Mark just a thought the maximun input voltage for 78xx series 1 amp regulators upto 18v output is 35v as the center 0v ,lead is connected to the metal tab could you have shorted the output when you gave it a poke ? the 24v regulator you want is ok with 26v to 40v input does the regulator have a diode across the input and output ( 1N4002 ?) the cathode connecting to the 30- 35v input it provides a discharge path when you switch off for any voltage stored in a capacitor on the output can you confirm that you need the 1 amp version as the 78L24 = 100mA o/p 78M24 = 500mA o/p 7824 = 1 A o/p 78S24 = 2A o/p if you only have radioshack to buy your parts from and they don't do the 7824 regulator you may be able to use a 7812 12v regulator and a 12volt zenner diode the cathode going to regulator 0v terminal and the anode to the pcb 0v John ps any chance of detailed photos of both sides of the board Last edited by john_100; 01-02-2011 at 06:20 PM. | just an example of a 12v regulator used in a commercial 24v design note the TIP31A transistor to pre regulate the supply to the 7812 and the 1N5349B 12v zener to provide a + 12v voltage to the 7812 ground / reference terminal Last edited by john_100; 01-03-2011 at 11:50 AM. |
