There are two definitions of CMOS, one refers to IC technology, but in your case on a computer or PC it usually refers to the CMOS housekeeping that is stored in memory such as system configuration and date/time etc, this message usually means the battery has died and the CMOS memory is lost.

Correct. It usually means the mother board may not know the time, date, type of floppy drive, hards drive parameters, etc. These may need to be put in each time you power up the machine or the battery needs to be replaced. If a Ni-Cad battery is left there, it may leak its guts out and eat away the deposited wires causing a permanent failure.
