Need Help!- tooling advice needed

I am running a hardinge xv1000 mill and I have a new job for it,
I need to bore 20mm holes and 32mm holes in commercial grade mild steel 30mm deep,can anyone suggest a tool that will do a lot of them and be reliable.

Hi,

Your method will depend on any constraints/encumberances ie budget/time/machine/dimensional and positional tolerances.

You could u-drill the holes undersize then follow up with either adjustable boring heads to semifinish/finish OR circular pocket with a semi-finishing and finishing endmill OR a combination of both methods.

Obviously if tolerances and surface finishes don't matter a jot just bang a size u-drill in there and be done with it...

It really all depends on whats most important. You should aim to fulfill the following three important criteria: Good, Cheap and Quick. Remember though the general rule of thumb which is: -

If it is Good and Quick it will NOT be Cheap.

If it is Good and Cheap it will NOT be Quick.

If it is Cheap and Quick it will NOT be Good.

I would suggest using the ISCAR "dz" style drills.
