Bridgeport Interact 720H ecoder cable question

Hello,

Machine info: 1989 Bridgeport Interact 720H

Some one has replaced the Y encoder cable with one that is ~40' longer than it needs to be. (See picture)

Should I shorten the cable to a normal length? Or was this a fix for something?

I shortened the cable, machine works the same. :-)
