Should my version 23 be able to open a solidworks 2012 part file? Thanks

This problem comes up every year. The CAD guys are ahead of the curve and the CAM programs can't open their new files until a patch comes out. Better to wait to upgrade your solidworks until you know your entire process is compatible (keep what works until you know the new stuff will work). Talk to ZBobcad, I'm sure they are working on it.

You should be able to do this with the Version 24 software. For further information call technical support at 727-489-0003.

    cad file formats

in Solidworks save as a STEP file. (i usually use type 214)
    .
ISO 10303 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    .
basically Step is a industry standard file format , sometimes called ISO 10303 that is used so older programs can read a file created on a new non industry standard cad program.
    .
sure you can spend a lot of money to upgrade your software but the customer can also just Save As the part file as a Step file. Usually if you offer not the charge a Cad file format conversion fee if they send you a industry standard Step file they will take a couple minutes to create and send you one.
    .
in my company we routinely save a copy as a Step file as as the decades go by often new Cad software cannot read a file created by a old CAD program especially if over 10 years old.
    .
there are internet sites where you can upload a new Cad file and then download it in a different cad file format (some are free and some charge a fee). but this can be a security risk as you are sharing your cad file and it is no longer private but in the public domain. this would be a confidentiality breach if you deal with other companies cad files
    .
most cnc machinist learn this in their 1st year but some companies because they always use the same software sometimes never or not very often have to deal with other cad file formats or types and have never learned the basics as they never needed too before.

I very rarely load native SW files into BC and here's why:

First, BC ignores the configuration state of the saved SW part.
example: If a hole or other feature is suppressed for a particular config, you will never know it when part is loaded into BC because all features are unsuppressed.

Second, you have to first close the SW file before loading it into BC. Since it's so much faster to measure features in SW, you now have the extra step of reopening the file.

I prefer to save from SW as .x_t files*...and here's why:

If you bring a .stp, .igs or .sat file into BC and forget to save it out right away as a .bbcd file....then start working on toolpaths...then hit Save (or AutoSave is enabled), it will save it out to the original file extension, losing the toolpath data.
But if you bring it in as x_t (and since BC doesn't support saving as .x_t), a "Failed in Save" message pops up which reminds to save as a .bbcd .

    * Note: if part has complex lofted surfaces then I usually need to use something other than x_t to preserve the integrity of those surfaces. Also if you're bringing in a multi-part file, .sat seems to be the only way to keep the solids separate in the .bbcd file.

    Solidworks parts..

You may consider using BobCAM instead of BobCAD. The BobCAM is a plug-in for solidworks. You can then work within solidworks , there are many benefits to not having to export the models.

Show me a roughing path that controls the chip load and air cuts as good as v23 HS Pocket and I might jump.
