V22 - Islands Getting Mutilated in Pocketing Operation

Hi all,

I was running a file yesterday of a fairly simple pocket with a few islands, and the islands all got mutilated pretty badly. I thought this issue was fixed with the latest update? This is pretty critical to what I'm working on, and I need to know if this is still an issue or if I did something wrong.

Thanks,

Don Williams

Hi Don,
One thing we found is the program can get "stuck" or "confused" sometimes if an open file with features in it gets the features manipulated and deleted and recreated with new geometry merged in then run. etc, etc.

I had to chalk this up to "anomaly" or just wierd as I couldnt re-create it again in a new file.

Was the process to get the bad operation fairly straight? Can you post a file?

Any info can help, especially a file that can re-create the issue.

Burr

I'll try to get that posted later or tomorrow. It was a bunch of curves with islands (guitar soundhole rosette) and the corners of the islands had a bunch of little circles dug into them. Looked like it was a result of the curving outer edge of the pocket intruding on the island areas.

Hi Don,
Yeah if you get the file up you'll probably get some good help here with that. It sounds more of a method issue than what I was describing which would be more of an oddity.

Talk later.

Cool

DonW,

Don I was told the same about Ver 22 the 1137 (or last I'm not sure about the #) that pocketing was fixed. I had a certain file that would never pocket correctly. It would always cut through something not always the same island but never a complete correct toolpath. Guess What? Same file moved to Version 23 cuts correct no matter if lace zig-zay or offset in or out conventional or climbmill. I still believe that version 22 is junk just my opinion. I feel sorry for anyone trying to use the version 22.

No doubt V23 is Better, however, you have to be willing to post up that "Certain file" so others can look and help out. Most likly someone can point out where a certain radius cutter is being crammed into an area and causing the issue with the toolpath. And present a small change in the feature setup that then has V22 create your pocket toolpath.

We could debate whether other software doesnt produce this or the new version can handle certain situations better than the previous, but for the current owners of V22, having their software do what they need, to get their work done is possible.

I upgraded to V23 - problem solved. BTW, V23 seems much better than 22, in that it has a few more little goodies in it, both on the CAD side and the CAM side. Talking with the tech earlier today, apparently they have a bunch of new stuff in the works to take it several steps ahead of where it is down the road. One of the files that went south I deleted, and the other got updated to V23. I recreated some of the error though for a picture.

Thanks Burr. I have to say I really like V23. It *seems* like it runs more solidly than V22 from having played with it during the last day or so. I'm becoming convinced that they really are making strides to improve this product, and that the direction they're heading in is indeed a good one. I've decided to treat BCC like my office accounting software and budget for upgrading every year. The changes to V23 from V22 were worth upgrading to I believe. Time will tell, but I'm liking what I see. Hey, maybe they'll even take it to parametric/dynamic (or whatever it's called) some day.

It will only get better from here!

Don I believe works on "Guitars" and doing that kind of work is very easy to find little bug, or workaround areas, or limitations in "Any Software or technique".

A good user forum can help here as you grow with the software. Mucho experience!
