One thing to keep in mind.
You can't rotate the UCS out of the XY plane and produce a toolpath.
You will need to rotate/copy the model relative to the UCS. (maybe make a separate layer for each orientation.)

I may be wrong about this, if so, please someone jump in and correct me.

If your just using the edges...your ucs is not an issue as bobcad will not care on a 2D file for a pocket path...But if you use the model then yes Moldman is correct you're going to have to rotate part...I did not look that close at the file but it looked like the pockets could be done in 2D

In version 23 there is a new tab in your feature called "Posting" and in that dialogue is an "Output Rotary angle" option.

If you want to index a part you use this. If you select cylindrical stock, the whole system outputs the x or y value as "a".

To just do single rotations for each feature, use the Posting dialogue which will rotate the rotary axis to that value just for that feature.

The 2d operations are much quicker and more efficient than the 3d ones when they can accomplish the same thing.

I dont know that I would approach it that way. I have had good experience with V22 also. V23 has many added features (Like the rotary I was talking about earlier).

If you are having some kind of issues with the operation of your V22, dont be scared to post specifics and figure it out with the help of others. Many users with much combined experience.

Keeping up with the software wont be a bad thing. IMO, It's headed in the right direction.

I would say my biggest problem is the unexpected error and the software then shutting down that is very frustrating. I do alot of parts but now I have been getting more and more 4th axis work what would be my best move right now?

BobCAD V22 Will open SLDPRT files for Solidworks V 2008 or earlier

BobCAD V23 Will open SLDPRT file for Solidworks V2009 or earlier. ( only if you download the new build that was just posted )

If you are trying to open a SLDPRT file in BobCAD and it wont open check to see if your Solidworks drawing has a suppressed feature in the tree. This will most likely cause a problem.

Dxf for 2D/ 3D wire frame

Iges is the best translator for trimmed surface files

Step is the best translator for Solid models.

2D machining in BobCAD is done with wire frame ( drilling, pockets, profiles, ect )

If you are cutting a 2D part from a solid follow these steps.

#1

Create a new layer and make it active

#2

Extract the wire frame for the pockets or profiles you want to cut. ( in most cases this would be based on 1 or 2 faces - surfaces - )

#3

Turn off the solid layer so you are only looking at the wire frame

#4

Create machining features in the Job tree to cut your part .

If you are working on 3D parts or machining you need to zero your part, not just for X Y but for Z.

3D machining is based on the surfaces or solids directly. You may need to create some 2D / 3D wire frame boundaries control where the tool will cut or not cut.

Create your machining features in the job tree and cut your part.

If your software is talking along time to calculate it is either based on the setting your are using for the feature ( very small step over ect ) or you are calculating a lot of moves ( Z level and equi distant take the longest )

You may need to step away for the software for a bit. Take a smoke go get a coffee or flirt with one of the girls in the office.

Any way even if the screen turns white or what have you don't just click your mouse on the screen multiple time ( not going to help will cause almost any system to crash windows error based on too much mouse clicks )

It after what seems like too long the software isn't done calculating one of 2 problems.

You need more memory on your computer ram video processor

or you have an issue with your model or settings for cutting.

All systems take time to process even the really expensive ones. So just chill and wait.

You only need to setup cylindrical stock for wrapping.

If you want to out put an A or B index that can be done at any time in the posting section of any 2D machining feature.

As long as your post supports it, you will get that index code in your program.

Also the UCS and 4th axis.

You can snap the UCS to the face of a part for an automatic insert of the rotation needed for that face to be at zero.

No you would not use the UCS for an in " car position " to set zero

If you zero your part and you want to find out / post the rotation move to have the "indexed face " to be perpendicular to the Z BobCAD will do this.

It's really cool but you do have to try it a few times to get or set the XY in the right place. You use a 3 point snap and the first point is X I think, where I always through it was the 3rd point that was X

Ok I don't have this just right, I need to work on my post more and I am a little unsure about where I reset the Zero to on the face for the index, but take a look this is what I got.

Zero part for round stock

2D wire frame for profile cutting

Tool path preview

New UCS for the face that you want to be at zero. ( it's shown in blue )

Different view of tool path

Hi Coolster,

An error like that should be able to get worked out. If you would like to get specific and try to put some time on it, then maybe we can eliminate that for you.

We are using V23 for the 4th axis stuff and are liking it. "I" will keep up with BobCad. It works for what we do.

The only enexpected stops with V22 I could never figure out was when jumping in and out of Verify. Quiting Verify haphazardly could craqsh the app.
Adhering to a couple principles seems to keep this at bay for us. "When doing a verfy, dont just go to "End". Hit stop, then restart and wait for program to become ready again, then END.

If you want to post some specifics maybe some here has some input.

Burr
