align to element "solids"

I am finally redrawing some of my 2D stuff into 3D. I have traslated and rotated my part and the axis is not aligned where I would like it.

However, I have noticed that the algn to element when using a solid does not seem to work well (for me) . I need the axis to be in the right location before I generate a tool path.

Can I get a tip or a a hint on the best way to align my screen axis to my existing part?

If you unstitch your solids and extract edges you can put points on your parts and move that way. Then, once you're done, stitch surfaces to solid to get your part back. Did that make sense?

still wrestling with 3D, the solids upgrade manual seems to give me just enough info for basic ideas and be confusing at a the same time.
