    Unhappy V24 Turning Custom stock

How can i make bobcad to machine only the stock and not from Z0. It is showing the custom stock. But it is always considering it as a solid round bar for all the long. why? Is there anyway to do it. I just want to cut the stock

    File attached with custom stock.

    Thanks in advance.

I couldnt open the file because it was made in "Demo Mode". But I think what you mean is you want the toolpath to step down from the defined stock?

You would use a finish turn feature which has a number of passes value. This in conjunction with the amount to cut per pass can be calculated.. rememebr that the fields take expressions, so if you know the depth, you can do the math in the field to get the amount of passes+depth per pass you want out of the feature...

Let me know if this is not what you meant.. Maybe you can post a screen grab....

Thanks a lot Burr, But I would like to cut the stock of material in parallel cuts. Some times I have a very little in X and a lot in Z. Parallel cuts near the stock save lots of time. I have attached the word file now, as I have only demo version in home. If it is not possible, then what is the point of having custom stock geometry creation.
I can use number of finish passes as you mentioned, If I have equal stock of material in both X and Z.
I dont know how to make screen shot as jpeg.

    Hi sri-09,
I see now... Yeah, it doesnt look like BobCad has that type of roughing in their turning system..

I think the stock definition is just a visualizing thing there.. It is not controlling or constraining the toolpath.. Maybe a feature request for them...

At this point, you could do a workaround and just manually create the stepped geometry as straight lines arrayed and trimmed to the surface geometry i guess.

    Anyway, thats all I got.

Curently the stock for turning doesn t play a role as a tool path boundary telling the sodtware where to cut.

This may change in the future, but for now you ll need to get creative.

    Hi Al,

It would be fine we have that type of toolpath, willsave lot time, especially if we got small diameter and end and large diameter near chuck. Hope will get in V25.
Thanks a lot for Burr and Al

For machining castings, I've done exactly what I think you're attempting. Try making geometry for a finish pass slightly larger than the casted part, then add the rest of your tool paths. When you post your code, simply delete the part in your code where its cutting your stock down to the actual "custom stock" dimensions.

I hope that makes sense to you, I'm not very good at relaying what I'm trying to say sometimes
