Arg. Can't drill holes in 3d object

I cannot, for the life of me, get a drill operation to work on my 3d (iges) object. The holes are in the object but I can't select them in Select Geometry at the beginning of the drill operation dialog.

I have tried to use Extract From Solid (nothing seems to happen or change). I have tried to project the lines to a surface (which I finally succeeded in doing after an hour of trying) but I am still not able to select the holes, nothing highlights.

What is the typical procedure to doing this? I can't believe it is this hard!

You need to try to get a point center on the hole.Select the point.Make sure that the point is at z0.

Extract the edges onto a different layer than the layer your solid's on, then hide the solid layer.

Just extracting the edges onto the same layer makes them impossible to see as they are mixed in with the solid model.
