Contact BobCAD and make sure they allow the license transfer, and fins out if there is a fee. You might want to get this in writing.
I was wondering if you guys had any insight as to what I should look out for when buying ver 23 from former user? It comes with the mill pro package, and all of the videos. He has the dongle, and everything else seems to be there. One thing I was looking for was the high speed pocketing, but I guess they don't offer it anymore.I have never bought CAD from anyone but Bobcad themselves for older versions, so I was wondering if you guys had already learned some lessons that you could share.
Thanks,
Matt

Yes, I would say that is solid advice. I haven't purchased any BobCAD products second hand but I could see the dongle failing at some point and needing replaced. You will be paying full price I imagine if the dongle is not registered to you.
I was selling v22 and i called bbcd to find out about fees- they charge for a lic transfer (for me it was 75.00), and whatever is already lic. you get. you can always upgrade to hsp, nesting, pro, etc.. you just have to pay when you do it.
bob
I bought bobcad pro with bobart on ebay and didn't have much trouble with transferring the license , you'll need the original owner to call into bobcad to ok the transfer , and you'll have to pay a $75 transfer fee
I'd suggest that you be careful as to how much you pay for it because some guys seem to be selling the software for more than they probably paid for it .
its no secret that you can haggle with bobcad and get the software for a pretty low price

Good advice guys. I checked and the fee is now $100, and it sounds like he would just need to call them and transfer info into my name.
As far as the mill pro package- any opinions? I would like to do some high speed machining without having to manipulate geometry and toolpaths to make it easier on my tooling. Is this version capable?
I have been using ver 21, and it is not very good in this aspect.
For $300 I think it still may be cheaper than Bobcad's "special" IMTS pricing or halloween pricing. Whatever the holiday or excuse is to lower their price to $500.

i can't speak for the high speed pocketing (don't have it ) but I don't find that the toolpaths are all that optimal in comparison to the higher end softwares , the functionality is pretty good for the money . So if you want to be making parts fast then you may have to do some tweaking
forget their posted sales prices , I've seen a lot of guys get good deals by speaking directly to them

If you lose it, yeah no replacement. Hell I think I lost 5 seats, send me new dongles at 75 bucks a pop! LOL If it breaks or fails though:
"Should the SIM fail to operate or be physically damaged, BobCAD-CAM will replace the SIM for a nominal cost provided the original is returned to BobCAD-CAM."
Nowadays I don't even think I would buy a replacement dongle. They had that new court ruling a few weeks ago that says it is perfectly legal to bypass the hardware lock as long as you own the software. No company, even the big guys like MasterCAM can hold you hostage for something you already own. I think that's a great victory for smaller businesses that might have an employee steal their hardware lock or sabotage it in some way.
EDIT: Actually, I take that back. I was browsing the MC forum last night and I forgot they have the dreaded "Maintenance" scam going on. You might be able to bypass the lock but you can probably forget getting any support for it. Pretty sad considering the price those guys are paying for their software.
I am a Mastercam user. What is the maintenance scam? A link?
John
Quite frankly, any "maintenance" program is a scam in my humble opinion. Bug fixes should be free, end of story. I use software of all kinds. I understand the push for software developers to crank out new stuff (keeps the money coming in) but I seem to remember a day when software companies put out a product and it worked. Now they have a bad habit of sending Beta version software out to paying customer and patching it up on the user's time. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way but it seems to work like this:
- Push out unfinished or rushed software
- User buys the software and tests it for the software developer on their time
- Software company fixes the problems the paying users find
- Software company charges the user for the fix and calls it "maintenance"
I have games that seem to get an update every other week to fix bugs. Call of Duty MW2 has been out for almost a year and they are still patching things up. In the days before the internet, if I got to Level 5 and the game would crash, I got a refund. Period. Obviously they didn't want to send refunds to millions of gamers so they did what any responsible developer should do. They test it. And test it again, and again. When it finally went in the box to be sold it worked like the user would expect.
Sorry I'm going off on a tangent here and a major derail. You will notice I'm not mentioning any other software company by name in THIS post because I don't need or want other users of said companies derailing further.
Updates seem to be the way things are, I don't like it but I live with it. But imagine the outrage if you bought a new car (the analogy is too close to true) and the manufacturer charged YOU for fixing a defect. Or if you don't have your oil changed every 3000 at their dealership, they come in the middle of the night and take the rods out of the motor. That is how I see "maintenance". Obviously there are plenty of users happy to continue leasing their software. Maybe it really is that good. Not me, no way.
The High Spped Pocketing is a HUGE advantage with your 2d pocketing operations...If the Dongle is licensed for it, then you get it... If Not, then you cant get it now... You just need to ask and confirm if the dongle has it on it's license file.. You could ask for a screen grab of the license dialogue sent via email before you finalize purchase...
