    Tapping

Started a new project ... wanted to tap several UNC 3-48 holes in a brass plate.

So I added the UNC 3-48 in the tools section in Spiral Tap and Point Tap.

In Milling Stock I added Feature Drill Tap then in Hole Parameters I selected UNC 3-48 as my Thread Type. In Tool -Tap ... (here is the problem) ... I was unable to pick the Point Tap, only Spiral was available ... nothing changed if I tried "Manual Tool".

So the question is ... why can't I choose the style of tap I need (Spiral, Point, Hand, Rolling as shown in the Milling Tool Menu)? Unless of course Spiral is associated with a different tap operation that I have not picked ... maybe same for Point Tap.

Next issue ... If I accept Spiral tap UNC 3-48 and do a Post ... the Feed rate given is incorrect. It gives a feed rate of 0.0283 it should be 0.02083 ... seems like a typo error as the "0" is missing between the 2 and 8.

The rest of the Feed rates are okay for the UNC list. So far there are two ways to work around the issue ... Use Manual Feed/Speeds or add another 3-48 Tap to the UNC list in the Tap Hole Sizes menu and define the feed rate there. In short I would then have two 3-48s.

Really should not have to do this.

So where could the error be ... after looking at a bunch of files I found a TEXT file that seemed to provide the information. UNC.Text also has the incorrect number (0.02833) and the rest are correct plus the other provided data looks good. (there are Text file for all tap types).

But changing this did not help.

Also I found that UNF has similar errors for the higher pitched taps. Didn't look at the others ... too many!

Anyone else have had these issues??

    I'm using V23 build 1493.

    Thanks for any help ...

    moldmaker,

Thanks for looking into this ... but as I said in my problem statement I did exactly what you responded with.

"So where could the error be ... after looking at a bunch of files I found a TEXT file that seemed to provide the information. UNC.Text also has the incorrect number (0.02833) and the rest are correct plus the other provided data looks good. (there are Text file for all tap types). But changing this did not help."

But to my surprise it didn't help. I even did a search for UNC.Txt to make sure there wasn't another one around somewhere (there is ... in the metric folder but that data is very different).

So the problem is still there.

Again thanks ... any other thoughts?

By the way ... did you have to change your UNC.txt file??

I repaired mine many builds backs and carry over the text files when I update.

    Sorry...here's step 4:
(the deleted millingtap.taps file will regenerate when Bobcad is re-opened)

    moldmker,

    That did it!

While I was at it I changed the UNF errors (7). However, those did not look like typo errors, I wonder what is going on there?

These errors makes me wonder about all the other tap data ... I will look into that later.

Thanks for providing me with that solution.

Now any thoughts about the Spiral and Point Tap (etc) selection issue?

I will be experimenting on that to see if I can determine what is going on.

    ....
    Look at all the files!!
There are several errors, most are in the UNF and UNC files.
I think the metric side was OK.

I notified BC about this last year.

After updating builds and seeing my corrected files overwritten, I now keep copies in another folder to replace the "updated" files.

I've noticed that, but didn't dig into it since it really just effects tool description and not the code.
I usually use system tools when tapping.
Tapping used to get very messy on earlier builds with manual tools, but according to others, it's better now.

All I can offer is the rolling tap is only selectable when using the rolling tap feature.
