| Can anyone recommend a book that will give the formulas for metal bending? For instance if I had .125 material and was going to put two .25 radius, 45 degree bends how much longer would my piece need to be to make up for those bends? Does that make sense? Thanks, Kenny

| I can send you a spread sheet containing a formula I use. It's fairly standard in the industry and works every time. The trick in figuring material allowances is to know what inside bend radius(IBR) is being generated. It's just that simple. The same tooling will generate different IBR for different materials or thicknesses. It's not voodoo, it's math. I've heard so many conflicting theories about stretch, shrinkage, set-back, K-factor, bend allowances, material allowances, bend allownce, bend deductions, bind and so many other things that it's enough to make a person looking for a simple answer insane. I put out hundreds of part programs a year and only have them come back if a brake op can't get the IBR I used in calculating the flat. Let me know if you'd like the formula, it works.... |

| Here is a good book for aspiring and perspiring metal benders: "Metal Fabricator's Handbook/Race & Custom Car" by Ron Fornier ISBN 0-89586-171-2 Another good one (not for bending so much) that has some real good primary metallurgy and machining and tons of other good info for machinists and fabricators is: Engineer to Win by Carroll Smith ISBN 0-87938-186-8 The ones I have are original printings but I think they have both been updated and are still in print... |
