Hi

Do a google search on DWI (deep wall ironing) used to make coke cola and beer cans

Hi

it is not a straight forward process of just banging it out of a flat blank.

See this link which gives some insight into the process
http://www.toyo-seikan.co.jp/e/technique/can/making/
The ounches and ironing rings are usually made from solid tungsten carbide.

Also speed and precision are important. A can making machine can produce in excess of 500 hundreds of cans every minute. At this impact speed the metal can act more like a fluid than a solid.

it is the total opposite of drawing where the body wall thickness increases in a controlled way the body wall thickness is made thinner by an ironing process.

I hope this is of some further help

brian

hmm...looks like possible technique..
eniwei thanks briean..
1 more question.
can i make the prototype without using solid carbide for the ring? is it possible? and is it 50 tons hydraulic press will work?

No Problem

Choice of carbide is just to give longer tool life and dimensional stability.

Not sure what tonnage press you would need I have never had to spec a press for this type of work so a bit outside my experience but I suppose it would depend on how many steps from intial cup to finished component you would like to do it in.
The can making machines I have been involved with (we are talking mid 1980s here) did in in one hit from cup to finished can.

You will have to do it with at least 2 or 3 dies to get the result you want.

Geof will become famous soon enough

That shape could be done by impact extrusion which is not as complicated as deep wall ironing. The deep wall ironing process is applicable to coated materials because it does not remove the coating.

If you Google 'impact extrusion' you will get many links, here are some of them:

http://www.extrudedprofilesworld.com...extrusion.html

http://www.themetalcasting.com/impact-extrusion.html

http://www.neumanusa.com/impactprocess.htm

http://www.stalcop.com/impact-extrusion.php

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_extrusion

Your equipment is probably not suitable because impact extrusion has to be done with a fast impact at an elevated temperature not just a slow pressing process. An advantage of impact extrusion is that, depending on the tolerances, you can get the part finished in maybe two steps; one to form the cup shape and the second to trim it to length.
