So I can't cut mild steel on the X2? I don't plan on making the chips fly, I just wanted to cut out small 2.5d parts in general.

Who told you that?
I haven't tried slotting or surfacing mild steel in mine. But I've engraved heaps of stainless with a ball cutter.

I tried milling a hex into some 304 stainless bar when I got the mill running and it was chatter city. I haven't tried since I've put the back brace on but the mill is at least 5 times stiffer than it was.

Yea torque is an essential spec when choosing a motor for a cnc. most commercial machines use big 2HP motors that are supplied by 3 phase power. If you plan on cutting steel plan on getting a decent sized motor.

That's what my comment was based on. I figured mild steel would be fine. I'm adding a back brace to the mill almost immediately so at least the most obvious weakness will be addressed.

The post from crestiksa refers to 2HP, 3 phase motors so it's a pretty safe bet, he's never seen an X2
