X2 Spindle Light

I made this Friday for my spindle on my X2 Milling machine. It started off as a square piece of stock and I did most of the work with my mill and rotary table. It consists of 18 ultra bright LED lights and they are glued in with 5 min epoxy. This replaces the old spindle cover and uses the same bolt holes to mount.

"Do you work in the dark?"

Not too often, but some times I blow a fuse. : )

I have lots of lights in the ceiling of the shop but the head of the machine casts a shadow on the vise and part that I'm machining so I'm hoping that this will help.

I also wanted to take my new rotary table for a spin and see what it could do. I'm happy with the results and can't wait to use it again.

Looks very nice. What did you use to power it ? Wall wart ? Power supply specs ?

Good job.

I took apart a old phone charger for the power supply and installed it inside my control box. One of the switches turns it on and off. I built the control box a while back and added the extra switch for a future light.

The LED lights require 3 to 3.5 volts @ 430 ma and the power supply puts out 5 volts @ 1000 ma. I had to add a small resistor to lower the voltage to prevent damage to the LED's.

"I loved the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind!" I should rent that again some day.

I know I have to add labels to the switches some day!

Dale,

You really need to CNC that thing Then you could engrave your switch panel. Once you go CNC you'll never look back !

Just my opinion

I already have one, but I'm not very good at writing G code and have a lot to learn. I hope to take a class on CAD very soon at the Tech.

I just got my copy of Home Shop Machinist and someone wrote an article on building a spindle light for the X2 also! It was pretty neat to see one week after I built mine.
