    Winter Project X2 CNC conversion

    My winter project is to convert my X2 mill to CNC. I've spent hours reading thru the forum and have come up with list of items I need to order, but before I do I wanted to post and get the opinions of forum members.

    I intend to get a rotary table in the future to make a 4th axis but For now Just getting the conversion done is the project.

    From Keling

    (4) KL23H2100-35-4B (1/4” Dual shaft with a flat) 381 oz-in $196.00

    (1) G540 4 axis driver $289.00

    (1) KL- 4813 Unregulated Power Supply 625W 48VDC/13A $129.00

    and From CNC Fusion:

    Mini-Mill CNC kit #4 - with X-Y w/BALLSCREWS $559

    I already have MACH3.

    You got the thumbs up from Hoss on an X2 CNC conversion on your first shot, Nice job...your good to go :P

    ZOB,

    I'm planning something similar with an X2 soon. Two questions though,

    Why did you pick the 381 oz-in steppers as oposed to the 387's?

    Also, how did you pick that power supply? I'm thinking of the 7.3A KL-350-48 but perhaps there is a good reason to get a 13A supply?

    Not being critical, just trying not the be penny smart and pound foolish.

    I have a related question. Why an unregulated power supply? Is there an advantage?

    Most likely because they are a better match for the driver stated. You'll get more out of the 381's with a G540 than the 387's at the limiting voltage of the G540.

    What in the data should point me to that conclusion? Comparing the two on the kelling site, the 381 has resistance of .73 and inductance of 2.8. The 387 has resistance of 1.0 and inductance of 4.1. Is that the difference?
    the price is the same, but does the 6 oz-in difference is torque not conform to the 'bigger is better' theory?
    For some reason I was under the impression that a larger voltage power supply would equate to more voltage output to the motors - gotta go back and look at that!!!

    a) Bigger isn't always better
    b) It's primarily to do with the inductance number. You choose a supply voltage based on the inductance of the motor (32*sqrt(inductance)). The 387 wants a higher voltage than you can feed through the G540 to meet this rule, the 381 will do better on the same voltage. At the max voltage of the G540, the 381 will produce more torque.
    Not to say at all that the 387 is a bad match for the G540, I currently run 4 of them on mine, but the 381's weren't available when I bought them, or I would have chosen them.

    The question should be: Is there any advantage to a regulated supply? And the answer is "No".
