    Question lathe2kmill

    Hi,

I am thinking about taking a lathe, say a HF 8x12, stand it on the tail end, attach a xy table to the carriage and use it as a knee mill. This would give 8in spindle2column, 16in Ztravel ; almost a G0619 for about half of the price .

Have anyone here done something like that?

No quill feature? Just moving Z by using the knee?

I don't think there is anybody crazy enough, even on this forum, to attempt something so off the wall. Why bother to stand it on its tail, plenty of people use their lathes the right way up for light milling operations. Why bother with an xy table, you already have the cross-slide for the first axis and a simple, readily available vertical slide would provide the second axis. etc, etc.

Good luck with your plan. It will be interesting to see the finished result.
