Making a table for an X2

I was thinking about making a table for my X2 for longer X travel. I have the opportunity to make one for about $$0.00. My question is it is probably going to be made out of something like 1018 CRS. I also have access to a blanchard grinder to make it pararllel. Will this material be suitable for making a table?

It might be much easier to use Hoss's method:

ive looked into that. I'm picky about the way things look. Its a great idea, very smart to utilize the Z column, but I don't care for the whole design.
