My neighbor's ancient Hardinge Cataract has had a bit of an issue. There's a screw that tightens the compound and prevents it from rotating. That screw goes through the bottom of the compound and into the cross-slide, where it threads into a little bit that spins around in the cross slide (I can see it through the hole). That screw has stripped, and I need to get the compound off the cross-slide to drill and tap that bit that the screw grabs inside the cross-slide. ![]() The hole is the closest one in this pic, ignore the slot for the lantern on the top. ![]() ![]() The offending hole is in the bottom of the compound, near the back of the pic. None of the pieces I can take off or unscrew reveal any way to get the compound off the cross-slide, however. Also, my neighbor tried banging it with a wedge, thinking perhaps it was pressed in. No dice. |

| I would have expected there to be a second screw there somewhere. A single offset screw doesn't seem like a very good means of ensuring the compound clamps securely to the cross slide. My lathe has two. Phil |
