super x3 spindle bearing question

I have a super X3 mill from Grizzly (G0619) that I converted to cnc a little over a year ago. I also changed the pulley tooth ratio to double the spindle speed. I've noticed that above 2500rpm or so the bearings get very warm (spindle and collets are very warm after 10-15minutes of running). I'm curious if anyone knows what the rated speed is for the spindle bearings? I've seen threads for the X3 saying they are rated up to 5000rpm, but I'm not sure if the X3 and super X3 have the same bearings. I'm also wondering if anyone out there has installed new spindle bearings on a super X3. Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi alpydawg. Welcome to the Zone! It's about TIME you posted. I also have a Grizz SX3.

I'm pretty sure that the Sx3 and X3 have the same spindle bearings. The problem is not really with the bearings, but the inferior Chinese grease that they are packed with. I recommend that you disassemble, clean and repack the bearings. Or, you could as easily REPLACE them and repack.

Here's a PDF with bearing disassembly details:

http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/projec...on%20Guide.pdf

Can we please have some details (and maybe some pics?) of your speed improvement mod?

Thanks,

CR.

Thanks for the info. I will try repacking the bearings. Any specific grease that you would recommend?

I'm still running stock speed, so I haven't done this yet. I would think though that any good AMERICAN high speed bearing grease would work.

Maybe some Japanese grease would be even better

Or in YOUR case, some good British grease?

Double Spindle Speed

Hi Alpydawg, Could you post some detail on the spindle refit to increase your speed as I am looking at doing the same on my X3. I've seen a lot of different ideas and want to increase the speed ... been looking at the belt drive option but I'm thinking of maybe a HTD or GT2 belt. .... The gears are a little on the loud side for sure.
Regards,

Super X3 Bearings

alpydawg,

There are three bearings in the Super X3 spindle they are as follows:

51106 ID 30 OD 47 W 11
32907 ID 35 OD 55 W 12
6006RS ID 30 OD 55 W 13

Personally, I would highly recommend NOT taking your spindle apart unless there is an obvious problem. I did this and replaced all the bearings in my spindle b/c the 32907 spindle had been severely damaged (this is the bottom Tapered roller bearing). Mine was damaged during a CNC error in which the the machine cranked sideways against a part without the spindle moving. The best place for the roller taper bearing (32907) is DennisKirk.com part 122120 (used in motor cycles or it would be impossible to find). To take your spindle apart properly you need a bearing puller, hydraulic press, and special wrenches for the lock rings among other tools. I have not been able to locate the RPM rating for this bearing so if you find it let me know.

I fashioned my own pulley to increase the RPMs of the machine check out: http://x3pulley.com/Installation%20Guide.html

Thumbs up Hi!

Thanks for the information about the spindle!! Very helpful!
I have no problems with the spindle, except that it's almost to hot to touch on the outside, when you have run it for 5-6 hours. I can't imagine how hot it must be on the inside of the spindle...(I have no tools to disassemble or assemble the spindle at the moment). I'm thinking about upgrading to VFD in the future, so I'm just ordering all the bearings in this thread. (probably will use different angular contact bearings though, NTN sells pretty cheap 7006ATYNP5(ABEC5) for 22$ here, or P4 for around 33$.) This spindle would not have any use for ABEC7 right? I'm mainly changing to ACB for a future Power Drawbar. ACB should be able to take the thrust load a lot better (according to NTN's spec sheet around 2700lbs static load). Am I interpreting this wrong maybe?

I was going to order the taper bearing; 32907 ID, from denniskirk. but when I added up the price, at about 45$ + freight at about 45$ to Japan(i don't remember the price exactly), I thought; "What the hell, I won't lose anything by searching a bit more." So, after a little thinking, I tried a different approach from ebay. It's called: Honda RVT1000 R RC51 RVT 02-05 Steering Stem Bearings, and has the exact same serial number (22-1039) as the maker of the ones sold at denniskirk. There are a lot of othe bikes as listed at denniskirk also, but the spare for RVT1000 seemed cheapest. Difference it that its only 24$ + 9$ in freight to Japan. Very cheap I though.
Of course they don't type out any measurements, since it's a replace part for a bike, but it should be correct.
I'll report back when I get it, if anyone is interested.

Red face

Actually, In my last post I said 2600lbs for 7006A. This is obviously wrong, and I probably misinterpreted the radial and axial load's. Sorry about that!

6850 N (1540 lb)for 7006C and 1400 lbs (6.2 kN) for 7006A. (This is from NSK's data at: http://www.tec.nsk.com/weblibrary/li...gs%20E1254.pdf )

This is at least more correct, but I guess that the specs change a great deal depending on what maker and series you look at.

I said I would report back. Sorry. I actually forgot about it, since I'm not planning on changing bearings in my spindle until it gets bad... It gets quite hot/warm while running 1800rpm for 8hrs though, but somehow I think that's normal.

Well, the bearings I bought was more or less crap. I guess that's what you get when you go to cheap. They had lots of strange marks on the rollers, and they don't roll good at all. The maker seem to be Pyramid Parts. Maybe they are good enough to use with a bike, I don't know since I only use cars, but I would not bet my life on it though. I did find some other stem-bearings for a Honda or what ever it was that seem to be much more quality. I'll probably test that next. I can't find the serial for that bearing set though.
