Hot rolled steel angle to reinforce my mill column?

Hi,

If this has been covered else where please let me know and a link would be much appreciated.

What do you guys think about me using two pieces of HRS angle (5” x 5” x 0.5”) bolted with epoxy to either side of my mill column as reinforcement?
Implementing this idea is not a problem I am more concerned about future problems with the steel moving and bending the column, do you thing this will be an issue?

Do you know of any other possible issues with this idea?

Any and all opinions are appreciated,

John

Not sure what mill you have and how you are going to install the angle, but you might consider cast iron angle plates. These are already ground and ready for something like this. I used one on the rear of my 80/20 mill build and it was absolutely perfect @ 90 degrees to the table surface. I probably just lucked out, but it worked very nicely. I think the 5 x 4.5 x 6 was less than $20 shipped from Enco. They were on sale.
They still are. Less than $20 for the pair and they already have the holes in them.

Sorry, didn't realize you were across the pond.

Thanks for your time LeeWay

I suppose I should consider the different thermal expansion rates of the two materials and what effect they might have rather than worrying about the steel de stressing over time. To be honest my mill could very quickly become scrap or a project for someone else after it has cut some parts for a couple of new machines I have on the drawing board.

You live and learn lol.
