X2 y-axis motor position

Hi guys, I'm about to start my Hoss-based X2 CNC conversion as soon as some parts arrive. However, I was wondering if there are any disadvantages in turning the y-axis motor 180 degrees and driving it with a toothed belt. My thought was to reduce the total depth of the machine by tucking the motordown the side of the base kinda under the table. I'm sure I've seen some pics of this configuration but would love to hear your thoughts and design suggestions and also see any pics of this layout.

Cost and complexity? Thats the only 2 things I can think of right now.

Buy me a Beer?

One advantage is you can gear down 2:1 and increase the torque of your servo's, you may not be able to do it with steppers if you run too high rpm.
I have a couple of Excello's that are configured this way, in fact all three axis have timing belt drive.

Here's how I did my Y axis, I'm using Servo's motors with a
2 to 1 ratio.

Alternative Y-Y stepper mounting

Funnily enough I want to go with the Fusion #4 kit but want to mount the y-y like this....http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50277
Very neat and out of the way........and cheap
Might pay for an additional un-machined y-y screw and turn it to suit a timing wheel!

I personally like that setup, but maybe I'm biased.

One warning on this setup: I lost about 1/2" of "Y" axis travel when the "X" travel is fully to the right, and with larger motors you will lose more (the X stepper will collide with the Y stepper). With this setup, you can flip the bracket & motor over to the other side, but you will lose easy access to your Y travel lock.

excellent idea if I must say so myself

That was the idea I had in mind myself, wanted to keep the footprint down, so I could build an enclosure smaller.

I have had no problems from my build and I have been using it for a year or so.

The X drive goes over the top of the Y, no problem.

Nice setup aminear! I almost went with that setup for my X, but ended up hanging it off the other end, and engaging the slot in the end of the X screw.
