ZAY 7040FG with metric drawbar?

Hi, I am new to all of this, so please be kind. I bought a White Eagle ZAY 7040FG mill at an auction for somewhat cheap still in original crateing. I just got around to testing it out, and ran into a problem. It has a R8 collet, but when I went to put in a collet I had just bought, I found that the drawbar/drawbolt was metric. I have to check the exact threading tomorrow, but aren't all R8 style collets the same threading? Another question, what are the differences with the 7040FG and the 7045FG? I see the spec sheet says that the 7040 has a 40MM "Drilling capacity" and the 7045 has a 45MM. I do not know what that means yet. Also, the motor is only a 1.5HP. Are the majority of the other parts interchangeable? I have looked at a couple websites that sell similar mills, but no real information about the 7040. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I dont see how it could be metric. Its prob just buggered up threads and it wont start. You can make a new one if you have to. Steel rod, correct thread bolt and some welding. Im thinking its 7/16 fine thread? Im inside and too lazy to go out and measure it right now. May be able to run a threading die over it to clean up the threads and it might work.

1 inch equals 25.4mm

40mm = 1.575 inch (1 1/2" drill)

I just measured it, and it is a M12x1.75 x 400MM (15 3/4") bolt. Anyone know the spec on the 7045FG?

An R8 should have 7/16" x 20 tpi NF thread.

Don't be surprised. I had an RF40 clone that had one handwheel graduated as 3mm per rev. and it was actually 2.5mm per rev. Took several ruined parts before I tracked that one down.

Well, after doing some more research and poking around, I found out I was wrong in assuming I have a R8 collet like the instruction manual says. Apparently I have a MT3, which would explain the metric drawbolt. Thanks for your help. I am just starting to do some basic machining, and I love this site.

Be careful when you buy MT3 tooling. The morse taper was not originally designed to use a drawbar so the thread is not standard. I've come across at least 3 different threads over the years. Never buy MT tooling if the drawbar thread is not specified.
