Help: CNC conversion of Grizzly X3-style mill not going well

Hi Everyone,
I've purchased everything i need to convert my Grizzly mill to ball screws (from Fusion) and cnc (from Fusion for mounts, and Keling for electronics). The problem is I just can't get the controller to work, and neither can my friends who i've gotten to try to help me.

Here are some pics of what i have:
http://www.michaelrenz.com/mill/

We have the controller completely assembled, and when you power it up the stepper drivers light up, so it at least is getting power. I've tried talking to the controller from 3 computers via Mach3, and cannot get it to work. So i don't know where to start since i'm brand new to this stuff. If i can't get it to work soon i'm just going to sell everything and be done w/ it, but i'd rather not give up.

The Keling electronics that i got are:
http://www.kelinginc.net/ThreeXCNCPackage.html

Part of the problem is that the wiring diagrams on the keling site aren't great, nor do they match the actual products i got. And setting everything up as described in all the diagrams i dl'd from keling don't make the setup work.

I understand/assume this is tough to troubleshoot over the internet....but i'm stuck and not sure what to do.

Help please!

-Mike

Let's start here:

Are the drivers showing a green or red lamp when powered up and the computer connected?

Are the motors locking (really hard to turn) when powered up? Also you should hear an audible clunk when the power is turned on.

A close up photo of the breakout board and one of your drivers showing the wiring would be helpful.

There is a thread in the Keling forum titled 'Some better Keling documentation' Here's a link to the thread:

Hope this helps some,
Jack

I just finished wiring up a 3-axis and figuring out how to get the motors to run in Mach3. Here are the issues I had to work through:

* I wired according to this diagram which was a huge help:

http://www.robertguyser.com/download.../download.html

* The power supply was set to 230 volts so that had to be changed to 115

* make sure the jumpers on the C10 are on the right pins

* make sure the toggle switches on the drivers are set - I have mine set to 2.7A and 1/8 step

* make sure the motor config is correct in mach3. If you are using the diagram above, you would set the pins for the X axis as:

Step Pin #3, Dir pin #2 (should match #s on the C10 in the diagram)
Dir LowActive is off
Step LowActive is on
Step Port and Dir port are both 0 (that is the LPT port they are on)

Also, I can't tell from your controller box picture but the C10 needs +5V input which is what the DC converter that came with it is for. It looks like you have the +5V wired but I can't tell where its going.

I am a total newb at this too, but why do you have 2 power supplies and where is the 115 in coming from/ going to?

Good pick up mrcodewiz
I can't see any AC connection to the power supplies in the photo. Maybe it is an old photo.

ok plug in just the c-10 board to the parallel port then with a multimeter check that when you probe the dir pin with the com pin the voltage goes ~0-~5-~0-~5 as you change direction this will at least tell you that your c10 and mach are communicating

Looks like you might be having the same problems I almost did being that I am electrically challenged.

Use the diagram off the robertguyer site. The one off of the Keling site did not work for me. For one, the Keling drawing does not show the AC plug wiring for the power supplies. That wiring should be on the three left most terminals (from standing in front looking on the terminal side).

Use the robertguyer drawing, wire it up exactly, make sure the Mach 3 settings are correct and you will run.

Thanks for everyone's input. This is Mike's friend Matt and I currently have the hardware and have been trying to get it working for him.

Here is an attempt at answering everyone's questions:

Are the drivers showing a green or red lamp when powered up and the computer connected?

X and Y(KL-4030) are red Z(KL-5056) is green.

Are the motors locking (really hard to turn) when powered up? Also you should hear an audible clunk when the power is turned on.

Yes, they are locked and they do clunk when power is initially applied.

make sure the jumpers on the C10 are on the right pins

I’m not sure how they are supposed to be set. They are currently at: 2-9 as output and COM=+5vDC.

make sure the toggle switches on the drivers are set - I have mine set to 2.7A and 1/8 step

This is how they are set.. Again, I’m not sure if this is correct.

KL-4030 switches 1,5,6 are up. The rest are down.

KL-5056 switches 4,5 are up. The rest are down.

Here are some more pics of the current setup:

I compare the wiring to that on the robert guyser site and report back shortly. I'll also make sure the mach3 settings match what is posted here and maybe grab a screenshot of that.

Thanks,
-Matt
