Why not use powerfeed motor for CNC Servos?

Hi folks,

Is there any reason you could not use powerfeed motors for the servos on a CNC conversion? It seems to me that one could build a feedback controller to to do this but I've not heard anybody mention it. Is it because these are all constant rate motors?

Thanks,
Dave (newbie)b

What mill are you talking about? If you mean the x2 mini mill then they do have a gearbox attached to them, which adds a lot of backlash to the system(im assuming they are some cheap china made gearboxes) and it might be hard to add an encoder to the end of the motor (no end shaft). And the gearbox would definatly slow down your max rapid speed

It was a general question as I am a newbie to these machines. I'm considering the newer Grizzly G0484 or similar square column mill at the moment and will eventually convert it to CNC.
