new motor with thermal shutdown

I've just recieved my 2.5hp treadmill motor and 130vdc motor control from surplus center of Lincoln NB. The motor has a thermal shut down mechanism in it. The system trips at 100 degrees opening the circuit (in-line component). I want to incorperate this into my controller. My question is do I put the shut down mechanism on the AC or the DC side? does it make a difference?

Usually these devices are not used to interrupt motor power directly, but to indicate to the controlling device, drive enable , e-stop circuit etc, which in turn shut the main power off.

Mine is the one with out the pivoting mount. same specs. What are you using to control it?

I've got the 11-2449 controller from the same site. I'll be interested to see how you attach your motor, and the fan. I think this is gonna be a common issue with these machines. We should both post pics!
Also, think we'll feel the extra HP?

I just got my new motor/controller combination working again. As I see it, the key to getting this thing working properly again, after attaining the new components from SurplusCenter.com is getting a new 5K Potentiometer from Radioshack and then getting replacement fuses.

Mine now works beautifully, all I have to do is connect the motor to my mill and I'm good. The important part is that this conversion works. So buying expensive replacements from LMS, ($275.00 + shipping for a new motor and circuit board compared to $40.00 at SC) will no longer be necessary.

Now what about that fan?

Do you mind me asking some questions:
what you are machining?
The size of pulleys on motor and on spindle and belt?
and a couple of pictures of the set up?
