    Stepper Driven Spindle Question?

    Hi Guys

If you wanted to replace the Spindle Motor on a X3 with a Stepper Motor, what size would it need to be? Would it be possible to do Rigid Tapping with this setup?

Sounds like a bad idea. A stepper motor would make a poor spindle motor. Stepper motors are generally low speed devices, there torque drops off as rpm increases, they use constant power for a given speed whether they are under load or not, and cogging at low speeds probably would effect surface finish. AFAIK the big machines that do rigid tapping have servo spindle motors with encoders.
