| I'm going for the homebrew approach. I did look at the kit that Rhonmac were selling but decided against it. I really liked the look of the PROMICA kit but lead time and cost steered me towards a DIY approach X and Y axis are now complete. I have redesigned the leadscrew supports and used angular contact bearings with proper pre-load adjustment instead of the sieg thrust bearings. I am very happy with the results: the mechanisms are smooth and free and backlash with the existing ACME screws is currently about 1 1/2 thou. I dont know how long it will stay like that though! Gone for direct drive 1.8NM steppers for X and Y. Planning to use a 3 NM stepper with 2:1 reduction for the Z. Will be using a homebrewed controller based on the PICstep drives and running Mach 3.
