as anybody ever heard of the cybaman replicator

i found that more then nice machine on paper the other day as anybody ever saw or work with it

That is a pretty neat machine. But at a base starting price of $119,000.00 I may have to wait until my lotto numbers hit.

Hi Felix,

Sorry for the delay in answering

Many thanks for your kind enquiry relating to the Cybaman Replicator.

The machine was originally developed for Engineering application's but
was adapted for Jewellery use, under a Project for the School of
Jewellery at The University of Central England in Birmingham UK.

The concept behind it was to provide Jewellers with an Automatic machine
they could use without having to learn Engineering Machinist skills. All
that is required of the operator is to learn how to construct a 3D
computer Model in Hyperll/CAD the Software package. This software will
also generate the process tool cutting path automatically by selection.
Once loaded with material and the program path the machine takes
control, machining a copy of the computer model three dimensionally both
inside and out in one operation.

The Jeweller who participated in the technology transfer project was
Alfred Terry in London. They took the prototype approx 5 years ago the
now have three of our machines all operated by one man.

details of this. Installing the system had profound effect on their
production: originally intended to produce Masters it became easier and
quicker for them to machine directly from precious metal tube and to a
large extent they stopped Investment Casting.

The Cybaman is a very versatile and powerful machining system in
miniature. The basic machine has a component envelope of 150 x 150 x
150mm with 50,000 rpm 2.2kw spindle with pneumatic draw bar providing
for manual tool change.an on board quiet running air compressor, water
chiller for spindle cooling and mineral oil mist lubrication coolant.

There are options for 6 station ATC, and various laser line scanning probes
The Hypermill 5 axis software bundle costs £14,885, we are however
offering incentives by way of discounts on Hardware & Software to
promote this new technology.

The 6 axis CNC Machining System has been developed to rapidly
manufacture functional metal components, directly from a component’s
computer model, three dimensionally. It actually replicates the computer
model, simplifying the manufacturing process, using robotic three
dimensional component presentations. This allows manufacturing
operations to be undertaken, without having to reset position. It
provides a total system solution to automatically machine complex shaped
parts directly from a computer model, in 'one hit'. from metal, wood,
plastic or any machinable material.

The machine has six degrees of freedom (3 linear + 3 rotary) allowing
complete freedom of movement in Cartesian space. It has been developed
specifically for manipulating components three dimensionally against a
process tool. This is achieved using the continuous instantaneous
centre, created at the intersection of its rotary axes, as a 3D “real
world” datum to emulate the “virtual world” Cartesian datum in the CAD.
It can in fact machine a "golf ball" on a "tee" since it provides access
not only to the top four but also to the lower four quadrants of a sphere.

This takes it beyond 5 axis machines into a CNC machine controlled by a
post-processor that has a primitive intelligence built around the
mathematics’ of the manipulator's movement algorithm. Superimposed rules
of behaviour written over this algorithm actually turn it a robotic
system. This simplifies programming and removes the requirement for a
skilled machinist, enabling operation by personnel having only knowledge
of CAD.

We advocate the use of HyperCad machining software which generates a 5
Axis cutter path APT file of the model's surface. This is then post
processed through our Cybasoft post processor to produce a G code
programe made up of 6 axis moves and feedrate automating the whole
machining Cycle.

v Eliminates “down-time” between operations, reducing time to
manufacture, manufacturing costs, Increasing productivity.
v The system is ideal for large or small batch component production
and being robotic, is re-programmable for production of other components.
v It can also be used as a 3D digitiser and may be fitted with
alternative process tools.

Interesting design.

It's my understanding that a 5 axis setup can achieve any possible angle. Watching that video, I can't see any clear reason for the "elbow" midway down the arm.

It's an impressive machine. I just can't figure out why they built it the way they did. Can anyone enlighten me?

You are right, however they may have added the extra joint to move or remove singular points in the motion, where a tiny angular change equates to a large movement on the work piece for example. Maybe also to get the range of motions needed in a smaller machine volume. Either way, from a pure geometric standpoint the 6th axis is redundant. In my opinion for dental applications like the one shown above it is very difficult to justify anything other than 3+1 axis milling. These 5+ axis machines are much more expensive and the products they are producing are pretty low value anyway. You do need them for implant supported bridge structures though.
