| Fellow CNC users... I currently own a JET benchtop mill (model #JMD-18). I see that several CNC conversion kits exist for around $4k. I would imagine that I can put together something for a bit less. Background: I am interested in using my mill to machine the following: steel, brass, aluminum, plastics and wood on occasion. I have a few initial questions for the forum. 1) Steppers or servo for my first CNC? Your opinons please. I'm leaning toward steppers.. Please name a few manufacturers of good to excellent motors to choose from. 2) Steppers or servo (is there a significant cost difference for the component)? I think so but not sure of all the components needed. 3) I want to start with 2-axis but eventually get to 4-axis operation. Any idea on motor sizing for the X and Y axis.. Is 300-450 oz-in adequate to start? 4) Anyone have a parts listing to get me started? 5) Sounds like a Gecko drive is the way to go. G201 or other.. How are these sized? Based on motor amperage draw? I know.... Use the search engine... But I'm totally new to CNC and I'm getting my bearings straight.. Thank you, Aaron Last edited by cueman; 04-24-2006 at 10:21 PM. |

| I have the same Jet mill.... 1. Steppers are cheaper 2. For hobbyist systems stepper drivers are a little less then servo drivers (Step/Direction type of drivers) 3. 450 to 600 oz-in should work perfectly. Have you measured the backlash on your current system...you'll probably learn that you'll have to move to ballscrews or newer ACME screws. 5. Geckos are sized based on Max Voltage and Max Current and you'll need to match the driver for either a stepper or servo system. |
