    DIY CNC Lathe

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post. We are building a CNC Lathe where I work, pretty much from scratch.

We have a MagMotors DC motor from another machine we want to use as the spindle.

I'm now looking for a DC motor driver that will allow us to control this motor using an Arduino.

From what I have seen the best option we have is to use a KB Electronics KBWS-25D.

This would allow us to power it straight from the wall socket (we are in europe, so 220VAC), setting the KBWS-25D to 90-120VDC output to the MagMotor that is rated for 130VDC and be controlled by the arduino from the 0-5VDC speed control input using.

The motor is rated at 7.5A and the speed controller only for 5A. This is the only problem I can see but I don't know if that means we will not be able to reach max RPM or if it won't work at all.

Thank you in advance for your help,

You should reach almost the motor max rpm as this is determined from the voltage of which the PWM version is higher than the SCR version.
You can set the current limit on the drive, you may find that you will have to tailor the acell/decel setting to avoid going into braking.
The spec sheet shows only 150w for this motor which is fractional HP?

    Thanks for the reply.

I assume then that this setup will work as well as any other alternative.

I sort of am married to the motor since its free but I would be open to a different speed controller since i have to buy one anyways.

Any alternatives as far as the speed controller is concerned?

    Thanks again,
