    R8 3-jaw Chucks: which one?

Made a new thread as I think the other one is full of other questions and this would be more specific, hopefully not an issue.

    3" 3 JAW PRECISION CHUCK WITH R8 SHANK NEW 02/28/12 | eBay

Bison 3 Jaw self centering Tailstock Chucks

    JTS Machinery & Supply Co.

Three options I've narrowed it down to.
The JTS has 4" one I like, its even cheaper. But that strikes me as fishy. But 4" would be good. Better then good. Great.

    Anyone have any experience?

probably all made in the same factory in china =D

4" is probably cheaper because the 3" may be more popular and sell a lot more so they know they can fetch a higher price.

It probably is a supply and demand thing that is effecting the prices, but it is possible that the 3" with its smaller internals "MAY" have better (possibly hardened) parts inside.

AT this level of difference in price I wouldnt expect much difference if there is any, but it may be possible.

If the 4" is what you need/want, then I would get the 4". All though I understand your thinking, it just doesnt make sense the bigger costing less when it should cost more.

Maybe call them up and ask and see what they say. Ofcourse if you uwant quality that Bison is the one to buy, lol.

4 jaw chucks are not as convenient for quick stock changes where multiple parts are being made, but will give a better shot at setting each part concentric with the axis of the machine.

Might be a tiny bit of 'fudge' in a cheap 3 jaw by moving the chuck around on the mount but usually only the high dollar 3 jaw chucks will run consistently true.

Only looking at 3 jaw chucks for that reason.
But accuracy won't be the biggest issue here. It's a functionally inaccurate part without interaction with moving componentry.

Like HOSS did, couldn't you make your own?
Raw R8 shank into a backplate to hold a 3" 4 jaw chuck?

Problem with a 3 jaw chuck is you cannot hold square stock in it.

The 3" we've been linking to so far is self-centering.
From at least parusing around I don't see any 4 jaw self centering chucks.

    Hah I see,you have a problem centering.

Well its not uncommon and can be easily rectified with a DTI gauge and the use of two chuck keys,I say two because it becomes much easier to slightly unscrew and screw at the same time, quite satisfying when you have it spot on centred.

I'm led to believe that those self centering chucks breakdown in time? whether thats true I don't know?
