    My take on an ATC

Well here I go. rwskinner and others suggested I document the build of my take on an ATC for my Seig KX mill.

My version is heavily influenced by the rwskinner version. Obviously it it will be adjusted to fit in my setup.

To start off with here is the model of my PDB. It is already completed and working on the mill.

Also, here is the model as it exists to date showing the mill and the ATC assembly. I am still working on how to attach the ATC to the mill. I have a bunch of 80/20 kicking around so I am going to try and use that as much as possible.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome. However be gentle with me as this is my first attempt to document a build of anything. Also, I am an Electrical Engineer posing as a wanna be machinist.

    Hello,
As long as you have time and tools to do the job, its no problem. I am thinking also to attach atc on my cnc built, but have no time. So I plan to buy ATC and PDB. It is the one from Taiwan. The price is around 2500 usd for atc and pdb, they quote already. But what do you think how difficult to install it.

    Hi man,
This girl Armless-type Carousel Tool Magazine / ATC/CNC machine center necessary/Auto tool changer system | SANJET INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD. | Product Information give me a quote. She called it Armless-type Carousel Tool Magazine. You can go thru their website and you can find pdb. I have built my own cnc mill, now I want to attached atc and pdb. The problem is I do not know how to control it. I have to learn from rwskinner how to do it. But I need time. If I have time maybe I can do it. Do you plan to attach atc and pdb as a.ash plan to do. I will follow and ask many question to a.ash as he build.

What do you plan to use for a spindle with that? It's clearly made for CAT40 tool holders, and I've never seen a benchtop mill with a CAT40 spindle.....

Well, I believe all of the design work is done so here is an updated 3D PDF of the assembly. Just need to add some slots/holes for mounting and then break it down into 2D drawings and start making chips. Unfortunately, my day job is getting in the way for the next while so things on this will slow down somewhat.

Mad Welder: What part of Ireland? I spent 2 weeks in Dublin and Galway in 1998 and have to say I loved the place.

What kind of tool holder you get in spindle?

    Looking good!

What sort of feedback does the control have from the tool-changer? Do it know that the tool's in position, and that the drawbar's popped the collet open far enough, or is it all just open loop?

Pretty much open loop. The only sensors planned for now are 2 on the cylinder so that I know if it is fully extended and full retracted.
